The Cheviot, the Stag, the Oil and Beyond
A community textile art project for Highland 2007

Textile artist Joan Baxter designed the wallhanging and co-ordinated the making.
Over 200 people have been involved in making the panels and work has been done all over the Highlands.

We were given several Cheviot fleeces to use for all the wool components.
The fleeces came from Nigg, they were washed in Brora School and in the homes of individual spinners.

Spinners from all over the region were involved in carding and spinning the fleeces.

We had a dyeing session in Dingwall, weaving took place in Fort William, Tain and Brora
and feltmaking was done in Dingwall and Ullapool.

Quilters made the top sections of each of the 4 main panels and embroiderers
and lacemakers from across the Highlands added detail to all the panels.
Much of the work was carried out at Inchmore in Pat-Chis Corner’s hall
and we are very grateful for this support.

Dimensions - each of the main panels measures 70cm wide by 140 cm tall.
They are mounted on two moveable frames so that the whole hanging
is 3 metres wide and stands 2.3 metres high.

Our aim is to have the wallhanging move around as much as possible for about 1 year.
If you have a space that is open to the public and you would like to
display it, please email us to make arrangements.

The wallhanging is currently on display in Highland Council Headquarters,
Glenurquhart Road, Inverness in the Council Chamber Foyer.

that was created to accompany the wallhanging by clicking here.

Sponsorship has been secured from Highland 2007, Awards for All Lottery Funding and Lifescan.
